Furazolidone powders capable of forming stable aqueous suspensions comprise furazolidone, a wetting agent and one or more of (a) a monosaccharide (b) a disaccharide (c) a water-soluble or water-swellable gum (d) a sugar derivative (e) a dispersing agent and (f) an oily substance. The wetting agent may be anionic, e.g. tetrasodium N-(1,2 dicarboxyethyl) N-octadecylsulpho succinate sodium lauryl sulphate, or sodium dioctyl sulpho-succinate; cationic e.g. diisobutyl phenoxyethoxyethyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, or cetrimide; or non-ionic, e.g. polyoxyethylene sorbitan mono-laurate, palmitate, stearate, or oleate, a fatty alcohol polyglycol ether, or octylphenoxypolyethoxy ethanol. The mono- and di-saccharides may be glucose and sucrose respectively. Specified gums include gum arabic, acacia, agar-agar, pectin, tragacanth, gelatin, carboxymethylcellulose, methylcellulose, dextran and alginates, e.g. sodium alginate. The sugar derivative may be an alcohol or an ester of a mono-, di-, tri- or tetra-saccharide e.g. mannitol or sorbitol. The dispersing agent may be a polymerised salt of an alkyl-aryl sulphonic acid, sodium lignin sulphonate, or polyethylene glycol 4000 or 6000. The oily substance may be a mineral oil, e.g. paraffin oil or an animal or vegetable oil or fat, e.g. olive oil. Fillers such as NaCl, Na2SO4, MgSO4, SiO2 may be incorporated in the powder. Alkaline substances such as alkali metal salts of weak acids e.g. sodium benzoate, sodium salicylate, sodium acetate, sodium citrate, sodium and potassium bicarbonate and sodium and potassium hydrogen phosphate may also be added to the powder so that the aqueous suspension will have a physiological pH. |
