A milling machine for milling a contoured edge on a workpiece 4 of sheet form e.g. for producing a template, is provided with a nibbling tool 7 adapted to provide an initial contour approximating to the desired finished profile, the workpiece then being machined to accurate finished dimensions by a milling tool 8, the two tools being adapted to occupy the same working position in succession. The milling tool 8 and its spindle 11 are axially retractable by pneumatic or hydraulic means (not shown), and/or may be pivotable out of the operative position. The die for the nibbling punch is removable and replaceable by an insert 25. A presser 30 is arranged above the die or insert 25 to hold the workpiece in position, feed and outflow bores 33, 34 for compressed air being provided in the presser. A suction bore 35 in the insert 25 and an inclined shoot 36 provide for swarf removal. The machine may be automatically controlled by hydraulic, electrical, photo-electric, mechanical or numerical control means and if the milling tool is slightly larger than the nibbling punch by an amount corresponding to the machining allowance required after the nibbling operation, an identical programme, template or drawing can be used for both machining operations. The nibbling and milling tools have respective drive motors 22, 20 the nibbling tool being reciprocated by eccentric means 23. |
