Novel compounds of the general formula where R is -SH, -SR 1 , -SCOSR 1 , -S-SR 1 , -SO 2 R 1 , -SOR 1 , --SCOR 1 , -SCN or a group of formula where R 1 is a C 1-5 alkyl, aryl, substituted aryl, aralkyl, substituted aralkyl, a heterocyclic radical having 1 to 3 nitrogen, oxygen or sulphur atoms, or a sulphur-containing radical having a centre of asymmetry conferring optical activity, and each of R 3 and R 4 is a hydrogen atom, an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal cation, an ammonium ion, or an organic-substituted ammonium ion, or an aryl, substituted aryl, aralkyl, substituted aralkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl radical, or a basic nitrogen-containing heterocyclic cation derived from a heterocyclic amine, are reacted with a desulphurizing agent to produce (cis - 1,2 - epoxypropyl) - phosphonic acid or its non-toxic salts. Specified suitable desulphurizing agents are Raney nickel, Raney cobalt, Raney copper, Raney iron, nickel boride, aluminium amalgam, alkaline sodium plumbite, sodium in liquid ammonia, or lithium in an alkylamine. The novel starting materials are generally prepared by reacting the appropriate sulphur compound with an appropriate 1-propynyl phosphorus compound and subsequently epoxidizing the resulting 2-substituted propenyl phosphonic acid intermediate.</p> |
