The mechanism comprises two pulleys (9, 11), one of which can be driven by a rotary electric motor, about which pulleys a link chain (6) is mounted, one link of which chain holds a support (carrier) (7) which on its upper part has a threaded rod (8) onto which a tapped tube is screwed. The assembly comprising the chain may describe a circular movement when the toothed pulley (sprocket) rotates. Conversion into a curved to-and-fro (reciprocating) movement is by virtue of the tapped tube which passes through an ovalised hole made on a windscreen wiper drive carriage. As the chain rotates, the carriage is guided by this tapped tube in a curved to-and-fro movement following rails in a housing (1) of oblong shape containing all the elements of the mechanism. <IMAGE>
