This invention concerns a procedure and an arrangement for forming a cavity in an elongate compact article 18. In order to minimise the groove in the article's surface, the arrangement comprises an elongate frame 9, gripping members 2 designed to support the frame against the elongate article 18 essentially parallel with the longitudinal axis of the elongate article 18, a tool carriage 11 which can be moved along the frame 9 in the longitudinal direction of the elongate article 18, which carriage incorporates a milling cutter 16 projecting towards the elongate article together with its drive arrangement 15, members 26, 27 designed to move the milling cutter in the transverse direction of the elongate article 18 relative to the tool carriage 11, also members designed to turn the milling cutter about a rotational axis P which is essentially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the elongate article 18 and situated between the elongate article's central axis K and the surface of the said elongate article which faces the drive arrangement 15. <IMAGE>
