The invention relates to a control device for the transport of workpieces in a machine of printing technology in which, with the aid of edge detectors, signals are obtained which influence the transport process. Workpieces should be understood to consist of thin materials which are fed to a printing machine, for example as sheets individually or in overlapped form, or which are transported as folded products in a stream from a folding apparatus. It is the object of the invention to develop an edge detector which is constructed using simple means and which is suitable for the detection of workpieces made of very different materials. The invention consists in providing, in the transport path of the workpieces, an electrification arrangement (5, 6) which is followed in the transport direction by an electrostatic measuring arrangement (7, 8, 9). The electrification arrangement (5, 6) applies electrical charges to the surface of the workpieces. The electrostatic measuring arrangement (7, 8, 9) detects the electric field which changes when the workpieces (3) are moved relative to the electrostatic measuring arrangement (7, 8, 9). According to the properties of an electric field, the greatest field strength changes occur at the edges of the workpieces (3), said changes being used as an indicator of the passage of the respective workpiece edge at the electrostatic measuring arrangement (7, 8, 9).
