The invention relates to a ship propulsion system with two propellers (2, 4) which rotate in an opposed manner and the first propeller (2) of which is driven by at least one first combustion engine (14) and the second propeller (4) is driven in the opposite direction by at least one electric drive motor (24) which is fed by at least one electric generator (16). The propellers (2, 4) are fitted on shafts (6, 8) arranged in a fixed manner coaxially with respect to each other. The electric generator (16) which feeds the electric drive motor (24) is driven by at least one second combustion engine (15) which is matched in terms of power to the electric generator (16), the first and second combustion engines (14, 15) being configured in a manner such that the sum of their powers essentially corresponds to the maximum required propulsion power for the ship. Furthermore, provision is made for a control device (100) which, if the first and second combustion engines (14, 15) are only used for propulsion, selects for the combustion engines (14, 15) common, mutually proportional speed characteristics for forwards travel, reverse and stopping of the ship. <IMAGE>
