A filter for gas at high temperature and pressure comprises ceramic filter candles 8 whose open upper ends are sealed to horizontal ducts 1, which collect the filtered gas, and whose closed lower ends are urged upwards by supports 3, which may comprise compression springs, or pneumatic rams (Fig 4) or ceramic bladders 28 supplied with compressed air at variable pressure from outside the filter housing. The housing encloses several banks of candles 8, each comprising three groups of parallel ducts 1 which open at one end into radial main ducts (2) (Figs 1, 2). The housing has an upper inlet and a lower dust outlet. The lower support in Fig 4 incorporates a screw connection for vertical adjustment when candles 8 are installed. Fig 5 shows an upper connection between a candle 8 and duct 1 with a constriction to limit loss of reverse flow gas during cleaning through already cleaned candles at the expense of flow through candles yet to be cleaned.
