In addition to a first drive device which moves only one lower crucible and a first control device which controls the first drive device, a second drive device which changes the vertical relative position of an upper crucible and an induction coil, and a second control device which controls the second control device, are provided, making it possible for the relative positions of the upper and the lower crucible and of the induction coil to be freely varied. The relative positions of the induction coil and of the upper and lower crucible can therefore be suitably set over the entire operating duration, starting from the initial operating state up to the final operating state, in accordance with the position of a smelting zone in an upper region of a material to be smelted, which accumulates as a result of the continuous charging with chips.
