Circuit arrangement for charging batteries having a transformer connected to the power supply, a switching device for interrupting the current flow in the primary circuit of the transformer, and a control device which measures the current and/or the voltage across the battery terminals and, inter alia, generates a control signal for the switching device, the switching device having two series-connected, independently operated switching elements, of which, during charging operations, the first serves as a switch-on and -off element and the second is permanently closed, and the control device emitting a switch-off signal for the purpose of opening the second switching element if it determines, despite having generated a switch-off signal for the first switching element, that the first switching element does not switch off.
