3-Trifluoromethylbenzenes of the formula (I), <IMAGE> in which the symbols and indices have the following meanings: R<1> is, for example, a straight-chain or branched alkyl having 1 to 15 carbon atoms; A<1>, A<2> and A<3> are, for example, 1,4-phenylene, pyridine-2,5-diyl, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl or trans-1,4-cyclohexylene; M<1>, M<2> and M<3> are, for example, -CH2-CH2-, -CH=CH- or -C IDENTICAL C-; k, l, m, n, o and p are zero or one, with the proviso that the sum k + m + o is greater than zero; are suitable as components of liquid-crystalline mixtures.
