The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for dewatering sewage sludges, in particular industrial or comparable sludges. The aim of the invention is to ensure stabilised dewatering even with difficult sludges with simultaneous saving of flocculating aids and upgrading the dry matter separated off with simultaneous reduction of the fouling of the washwater. According to the invention, this is achieved by metal salts being added to the thin sludge in a defined ratio prior to the pressing operation and flocculants being added and additives being introduced directly upstream of the belt filter press. The granulated dry matter is then mixed with further additives so that even difficult industrial sludges are suitable for further processing.
