Polymerisation of tar with a vinyl initiator

The initiator is polyvinyl chloride and the catalyst is dioctyl phthalate. Barium and lead based stabilisers may be added with fillers and solvents if required. The products are used as waterproof coatings for roofs, roads, etc. or as sealing compounds. Known processes use copolymn. of additives for tar without the tar taking part in the reaction. Addition of large amounts is required. The present process provides a method for plasticising tars to an easily workable state and polymerising them to give a tough product.
