<p>1337728 Fluid logic elements J GACHOT S LEKARSKI P HARDY and L HARDY 2 Dec 1970 [2 Dec 1969] 57154/70 Heading G4P [Also in Divisions G3 and F2] A fluidic logic element is formed of a stack of laminar flexible elastic members bounded by rigid plates. The flexible members are apertured for the passage of fluid, the apertures being closable by contact with the face of the adjacent member or plate. In one embodiment, Fig. 3, flexible members 3, 4 are sandwiched between plates 1, 2, plate 1 being domed to allow the part 11 of member 3 to move upwards when fluid is admitted to aperture 9, fluid then flowing via aperture 13 and dome 8 to outlet aperture 10. Part 11 prevents flow from aperture 10 to aperture 9. A fluidic OR gate, Fig. 4, comprises of three flexible members. The output signal S represents the logical function (a + b). In a further embodiment, Figs. 5 and 6, one of the members 27 has upstanding parts 35, 36, and members 25, 26 separated by a rigid plate 37. The element can act as an inverter, a bistable settable to one state or the other by a signal on a respective input, an AND gate, or a NOR gate. Fig. 5 shows the element in one state in which chamber 28 is in communication with aperture 29. Fig. 6 shows it in the state in which chamber 28 communicates with aperture 34 via aperture 30 and the gap formed between members 25, 26 by plate 37 when diaphragm 32 is in its raised position. Embodiments generally similar to that disclosed in Figs. 5 and 6 are described. The logic elements may be interconnected to perform a required function, and the laminar members and plates may be common to the elements, so providing a functional module. Such a function may be that of a bi-stable unit which is switched from one state to the other by successive pulses on the same input, the output signal being maintained when the input pulse ceases, Fig. 12a-12d (not shown).
