A method and a device for monitoring the operation of a sensor, particularly a sensor for detecting a measurement value in a motor vehicle, is described. When predetermined operating states are present, a measurement value is acquired and compared with a reference value. Errors are indicated when a measurement value provided by the sensor deviates from a reference value by more than a tolerance value. A measurement value acquired and stored at an earlier time, at which a corresponding operating state was present, is used as reference value.
