PURPOSE:To automatically form a preform before outer vapor deposition processing into an accurate cylinder. CONSTITUTION:A correcting iron 6 is sent, along the longer direction of an optical fiber preform 1 to be formed, at each given formation correction interval and stopped. The correcting iron 6 is brought into contact through a proper pressure detector 16 with the optical fiber preform 1 and retained. The preform 1 is revolved around an axial line of its own while being heated to investigate a value shown by the pressure detector 16 and the preform is corrected until the value reaches <= a set value to provide a method for automatically forming the optical fiber preform. |
