A cable stitch pattern is produced on a group of five consecutive needles 1a . . 1e of a straight bar machine by the use of a single loop transfering mechanism comprising two transfer points P1, P2 one of which is rendered ineffective during a five stage transfer operation so that only one point effects a loop transfer at one stage whilst both points effect a transfer at another stage. For example, as shown in Fig. 4, initially the points are positioned so that point P1 is opposite an empty needle. The point P2 transfers loop from needle 1a to needle 1b both points actually moving simultaneously. Subsequently the points are reset and aligned with needles 1d 1e but a peaking spade buffs point P2 and in the next transfer movement the point P2 fails to transfer the loop in needle 1e but point P1 transfers loop from needle Id to needle 1a. The points are then reset to cover needles 1b, 1c and the corresponding loops transferred by both points, as shown. The successive stages are completed with the loop transfer forming a cable stitch having crossed over loops shown at stage E in Fig. 4. Alternatively instead of using a peaking spade to render the point ineffective the points may be operated by electromagnets into and out of operative positions. The shogging of the points is controlled by a lead screw from pawl and ratchet mechanism which under the influence of electromagnets causes the points to move in either direction and for one, two or three needle spaces. |
