Butadiene is homopolymerized in the presence of a catalyst which will yield a product of at least 70% cis 1,4 units and of a pre-formed polybutadiene containing at least 50% trans 1,4 units to yield a mixture of stereoregular polybutadienes. Conventional catalysts such as ziegler, rhodium chloride, peroxides, alkali metal and Alfin may be used to form the initial trans-1,4 product, while various catalysts based on metals and organometallic compounds may be used to form the cis-1,4 product. The polymer mixture may be vulcanized in the usual way and the final product has improved properties. In examples the catalysts employed are (a) trans - 1,4:VCl 3 /Et 3 Al, TiCl 3 /i-Bu 3 Al; and (b) cis-1,4:cobalt octoate/Et 2 AlCl, Co deposited on Zn/Et 2 AlCl, T:I 4 /Et 2 AlCl, Co/ Et 2 AlCl/HgCI 2 , cobalt or nickel acetylacetonate/Et 2 AlCl, CoCl 2 /Et 2 AlCl, NiCl 2 /Al/PCl 5 , nickel naphthenate/Et 3 Al/BF 3 .Et 2 O, Ti(OBu) 3 Cl/Et 2 AlI, CoCl 2 /Al/PCl 5 , Co/EtAlCl 2 /pyridine, and TiI 4 /i-Bu 3 Al.
