A spring-engaged, hydraulically released, collapsible mandrel for supporting a wire-coiling drum 36 comprises a number of stepped tapered bore segments 28, 29 arranged in a ring around a correspondingly tapered core head 21 and expanded into engagement with the drum 36 by a number of Belleville spring washers acting via a push-pull rod 37, release of the drum being effected manually by fluid pressure supplied via a stuffing-box 59 to a cylinder 53, fast with the core 21, thrusting a piston 55, 56 to axially move the rod 37 to relieve the spring pressure and contract and release the ring of segments from the drum. The core 21 is gear driven at 15, 17 via an electric motor 20, the whole unit being carried by a stand 10. The Belleville spring washers may be replaced by a compression spring or in an alternative arrangement (not shown) a tension spring. |
