The lasting machine described in Specification No. 1,133,560 is provided with a modified toe conforming yoke 152. The yoke consists of a band 166 of p.t.f.e. on a spring-like backing member 158 which urges the legs 156 of the yoke 152 inwardly. The bight of the yoke (Fig. 9) is adjustably mounted on a bracket 164 which is connected by a pin 240 to a piston 234 in a bore 236. With the yoke 152 in its operative position the piston 234 abuts a resilient spacer 246. The forward ends of the legs 156 of the yoke are pivoted by pins 214 to links 212 whose other ends are pivoted by pins 210 to drive bars 168. The links 212 have shoulders 218 which abut the drive bars 168 to limit the pivotal movement of the links 212 about the pins 210. The drive bars 168 are pivoted to bell cranks 180 which are also connected to the piston rods 180 of air motors 186. The bars 168 are urged forwardly by cam followers 226 carried by pistons 222, 224. In operation the yoke is positioned above the shoe assembly with the inner edge of the yoke overlapping the outer edge of the shoe assembly so that when the shoe assembly is raised the yoke performs a downwiping operation on the shoe. When the shoe assembly has been raised to the correct height with respect to the wipers (not shown) the air motors 186 are operated to move the drive bars 168 inwardly to clamp the yoke against the shoe assembly. The resilient spacer 246 (Fig. 9) allows forward movement of the bight of the yoke during the clamping operation. When lasting moccasins and other shoe uppers having a similar ridged seam the yoke is retracted to an inoperative position during the rise of the shoe assembly by supplying compressed air through a fitting 248 into the bore 236 to move the piston 234 and hence the bight of the yoke rearwardly. The air pressure is also sufficient to overcome the forward force exerted by the pistons 222, 224 thus allowing the legs 156 to move rearwardly. The machine also includes heaters 300 which are resiliently mounted on brackets 302 and which are pressed against the wipers (not shown) when they are in their retracted position. |
