Tetramethyl orthosilicate is prepared by reacting silicon, iron silicide or ferrosilicon or mixtures thereof, with methanol in the presence of sodium methylate as catalyst at a temperature of from 15‹ C. up to the boiling point of the reaction mixture. The sodium methylate may be prepared in situ by adding sodium to the mixture. An apparatus is shown for carrying out the process using granular silicon or silicon-containing material. |
