The invention relates to a method for vitrifying waste containing volatile constituents and, in particular, heavy metals, the method including melting of the solid waste in the chamber (1) of a furnace (F) provided with at least one burner (B1, B2), in order to form a bath of glass, pouring the molten glass through a tap hole (13) and treating the hot gases (G) or fumes before discharge to the atmosphere. According to the method, the volume, the viscosity and the turbulence of the bath (V) are adjusted jointly, as are the kinetics of the material flows in the chamber (1) of the furnace (F), in order to perform at least one of the two operations consisting in almost completely trapping the inorganic fraction and, in particular, the heavy metals, in the bath (V), or selectively separating at least some of the volatile constituents. The invention also relates to a vitrifying furnace employing such a method. <IMAGE>
