The invention relates to a security device, of the type capable of securing a steering wheel to or releasing it from a column mounted so as to rotate in a fixed structure. According to the invention, the column C consists of two independent sections (1, 2) fitted freely one into the other, the end (12) of one section (2) being made in the form of a bush in which a locking member (30) is arranged which can be moved between a coupling position and a decoupling position of the two sections of the column; a push element (40), movement of which is controlled by an operating member (46) associated with a lock mechanism, can move the member (30); when the member is in its second position, the push element or the said member couples this section (2) in rotation with the fixed structure (3) in order simultaneously to release the steering wheel from the column and block the transmission mechanism and, when this member is in its first position, the said member and the said bush-shaped end (120 are decoupled from the fixed structure (3), in order simultaneously to secure the steering wheel to the column and unblock the transmission mechanism. <IMAGE>
