The clearance or preloading of a rolling bearing 10, which supports a work spindle, is controlled by using a fluid. The forces acting on the bearing during operation are measured and the force-measuring signals are used to generate control signals for controllable valves 15, 16, 17, by which the flow of fluid fed to the bearing or its structural components 11, 12 is controlled. As shown fluid of different temperatures is supplied to the inner and outer rings 11, 12 of the bearing in dependence of the signal output generated by the force measuring sensors 13 to thereby heat/cool the respective bearing parts to control bearing clearance or preloading. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2 not shown) it is the flow rate rather than the temperature of fluid which is controlled to each respective bearing part. <IMAGE> |
