PURPOSE:To provide the apparatus for producing the single crystal optical fiber which produces the high-quality single crystal optical fiber applied to optical signal processing, optical memory element, etc. CONSTITUTION:This apparatus for producing has a heating and fusing means for heating and fusing one end of a single crystal optical fiber preform 14 by a laser beam 13 and a moving means for bringing a seed crystal 18 into contact with the fused part and moving the seed crystal 18 in the same direction as the moving direction of the optical fiber preform 14 while moving the single crystal optical fiber preform 14 toward the molten part. The apparatus has a gas introducing means for introducing gas 21 subjected to temp. control into the molten part 16.
