A method for the treatement of biochemical damage or a medical disorder associated with free radical formation in a patient comprises administering to the patient an effective amount of a bile alcohol or a derivative thereof, particularly 5 beta -scymnol, 5 beta -scymnol sulphate, 5 alpha -cyprinol or 5 alpha -cyprinol sulphate. The invention includes treatment of photodamage to the skin and/or hair of a patient associated with free radical formation resulting from UV irradiation as well as treatment of inflammatory disorders or conditions of the skin. Compositions, including topical compositions, are also included.
