The invention relates to a Jacquard machine for the positive raising and lowering of the warp threads in a weaving machine without the use of harness cords. The invention relates, furthermore, to a process for operating the Jacquard machine according to the invention. The Jacquard machine according to the invention has a bistable element for each sinker (6). The bistable element can be designed, for example, as an elastically deformable bar (1) or elastically deformable leaf spring. A mechanical deformation stress acts periodically on the bistable element and guides the bistable element into one of two stable states in dependence on a slight initial deflection. An initiating device (8), which causes a slight deflection of the bistable element before the action of the mechanical deformation stress, ensures that the bistable element assumes a specific one of its two stable states. Furthermore, a controllable locking device (9), which permanently locks the bistable element in its stable states in a pattern-controlled manner, can be provided. During the locking time, the sinker (6) connected to the bistable element (1) does not participate in the raising and lowering movement. By means of an unlocking element (11), the locking state can be cancelled after a timespan dependent on the pattern to be woven. <IMAGE>
