A lithium oxide-contg. nickel oxide cathode is produced by sintering Ni-particles to give a sintered body and oxidising the nickel to nickel oxide. The novelty is that a sintered body is formed, which is composed of Ni-particles connected to each other having at least one metal on its surface more basic than nickel and which forms a sparingly sol. oxide or lithium metallate in the electrolyte. USE/ADVANTAGE - For fuel cells having a lithium carbonate-contg. melt as electrolyte. The cathode has good conductivity and longer service life than lithium oxide-doped nickel oxide cathodes.
