In a safety valve (1) which opens and closes a flow passage (2') by means of a valve plate (4) and has a piston (8) which is connected to the valve plate (4) and can be subjected in a working space (24) to compressed air for the purpose of opening or closing in the longitudinal direction, a compressor (11) which generates the compressed air, for example a diaphragm pump, is formed in the safety valve (1). There is no need for a compressed-air facility with the corresponding connections and conduits in the vicinity of the safety valve (1). The power of the compressor can be chosen to match the compressed-air requirement. <IMAGE>
