A control unit (10) for a chain shifter uses a reversible electric selector motor (26) to position a cam selector (54) within a pawl guide housing (60) so that a travelling pawl will be directed as necessary for chain shifting. The motor (26) rotates a low mass eccentric (31), the eccentric (31) providing sufficient angular force to actuate a spring-loaded latch key (45), the key (45) positioning the cam selector (54). As the eccentric (31) accelerates, it gains sufficient force until it impacts and moves one of a pair of latch arms (33, 35) holding the key (45) in a central position, allowing the latch key (45) to rotate.
