To mount a cylinder device (10) on a mounting surface extending perpendicularly to the axis of a piston rod, bolts (42) are inserted through tapped holes (32, 34, 36, 38) which are formed in a rod cover (16) and extend along the axis of the piston rod. A cylinder tube has recesses (56) formed in each of its four corners in order to allow the bolts (42) to be inserted from a head cover (18) towards the rod cover (16) without being hindered by the four corners of the cylinder tube (14). It is thus possible to mount the cylinder device (10) in a very simple manner on the mounting surfaces. <IMAGE>
