The invention relates to an anti-theft system for motor vehicles with a device whose transmitted signals are evaluated by a monitoring station. Known systems have the disadvantage that for the transmission of signals they either use the power supply of the vehicle or require a separate power supply. This disadvantage is avoided by the invention in that an electronic identification device is attached to the windscreen and/or rear window of the motor vehicle, which identification device comprises a receiving component, a memory which contains vehicle-specific code information and a transmitter which emits the code information. The monitoring station contains a power transmitter whose transmitted signals scan the entire width of the carriageway and as a result supplies the identification device with energy when the motor vehicle travels into the sensing region.
