The invention relates to a process for the preparation of homogeneous chitosan granules containing chitosan by coagulating a solution of chitosan in an aqueous solution of an organic and/or inorganic acid, using an alkaline coagulating bath. The chitosan spinning solution that contains modifying agents like polyalcohols or polyglycols such as glycol, glycerol, polyvinyl alcohol or polyethylene glycol is added dropwise to a coagulating bath that contains an alkaline solution, especially an aqueous solution of an inorganic base such as sodium hydroxide, after which the granules obtained are washed and possibly dried. The resulting granules are used for purifying water by the removal of absorbed impurities.
