In the case of a method and an apparatus for surface treatment for the purpose of providing resistance to wear and corrosion, an altered metal part, the surface of which is intended to be altered, and a block, which may consist only of metal or may contain an alteration material (for example ceramic or W-C/Co), are rotated relative to one another, and an electrical discharge is produced between the block and the altered metal part in order to form an alteration layer on the surface of the altered metal part. If the alteration material is not in the block, then it can be supplied via a bath of a dielectric or by spraying on to the discharge boundary area. In this way, it is possible for the cutting edges of a cutting tool having a complicated shape to undergo a simple surface alteration, in order to carry out tool surface treatment which substantially increases the service life of a cutting tool. The cutting machining and the surface treatment can be carried out alternately, this being established by a controller.
