Process for the batchwise cleaning of at least one workpiece using an organic solvent and/or for the drying of a workpiece cleaned in this way in a working chamber capable of being sealed in a pressure-tight manner, in which process, after introducing the workpiece into the working chamber, the latter is closed, the clean air present in the working chamber being extracted, at least for the most part, from the working chamber and stored after closure of the working chamber and before the workpiece treatment begins, in order to minimize the solvent emission and the costs, stored solvent-vapour-containing air originating from the treatment of the preceding batch being passed into the working chamber in connection with the workpiece treatment, and the solvent-vapour-containing air present in the working chamber being extracted, at least for the most part, from the working chamber and stored, whereupon the previously stored clean air is passed into the working chamber, the latter is opened and the workpiece is withdrawn from the working chamber.
