[Also in in Division C7] 1,4-Butanediol is prepared by hydrogenating a mixture of 2-butyne-1,4-diol in the presence of a 1-14 mesh (U.S. Sieve Number) granular, foraminous, Ni-Al catalyst which has been activated by removing 5-30% of the Al from a Ni-Al alloy consisting essentially of 35-60% by wt. of Ni and 40-65% by wt. of Al. The process may be operated continuously with recycling of a major portion of the reactor effluent to the reactor with removal of heat from the reactor stream. Alkali is preferably added to the reactants to maintain a pH of 6À5-8 at the reactor exit. The inlet temperature may be increased as reaction proceeds to maintain an acceptable level of butenediol in the products. A second hydrogenation stage may be employed to reduce any butenediol to butanediol.</p> |
