A drive unit (14) of a vehicle toy (10) realizes a high-speed performance and a large-torque performance, is excellent in operability and provides improved battery life. In the drive unit (14), there are provided a motor gear (44) driven by a radio-controlled motor (42), first and second drive gears (34, 52) for independently driving left-hand and right-hand wheels (20a, 20b), first and second intermediate gears (30, 50) for causing the first and second drive gears (34, 52) to rotate at a lower speed, and an idler gear (32) meshing with one of the intermediate gears to cause the first and second drive gears (34, 52) to rotate in opposite directions. A travelling gear assembly (48) is rotatably driven by the motor gear (44) to travel along a path between a forward position (F) for forward vehicle toy drive and a turn position (R) for vehicle toy turning, the travelling gear assembly (48) directly driving the first and second drive gears (34, 52) in the forward position and driving the same gears through the first and second intermediate gears (30, 50) and the idler gear (32) in the turn position.
