A pneumatic tyre and wheel assembly comprises a tubeless outer tyre 13 of parallel cordreinforced elastomeric material and having axially spaced beads for mounting on a wheel rim 14; and an inner shield member 12 wound from a tape of elastomer covered parallel cords extending in a generally geodesic overlapping pattern and having axially spaced bead portions of a diameter substantially equal to the diameter of the beads of the outer tyre; the diameter of the radially outermost portion of the inner member 12 being intermediate the diameter of the tyre beads and the inner diameter of the outermost part of the tyre 13 when inflated, the inner member being mounted on the rim as shown, thus defining an outer chamber between the inner member 12 and the outer tyre 13, and an inner chamber between the inner member 12 and the wheel rim. The inner member 12 has a layer of air impervious elastomer 12b on its inner surface. Circumferentially spaced ribs 12a extend axially on the radially outer surface of the member 12. The inner member 12 may be produced by winding a tape of elastomer covered parallel cords on a cylindrical drum as described in Specification 988,582. The beads of the member 12 are formed by overlapping tapes tangential to the bead circles. The carcass so produced is shaped to a generally toroidal configuration and vulcanized. The inner and outer chambers are inflated through valves (17) (Fig. 3, not shown) and 16 respectively, the valve 16 being connected to the outer chamber by a tube 15. In an alternative embodiment the elastomer layer 12b is omitted and the inner chamber inflated by means of an inner tube. |
