Sepn. is effected by subjecting the particles in a suitable medium to at least 2 electric fields varying with time. The particles are moved in overall directions generally transverse to the respective overall directions of the fields. With the sepn. procedure analyses can be made with materials for which the prior techniques were not suitable. The sepn. of chromosomal DNA, chromosomal mapping, convenient prodn. of genetic libraries, studies of the effects of drugs on chromosomal DNA and convenient characterisation of polymers are possible, sepns. with a high degree of resolution and at higher speeds are possible with larger molecules, and particles of greatly different mass can be sepd. Cells for electrophoretic sepn. of the macromolecules contained in them can be lysed with a min. of degradation or breakage.
