PURPOSE:To provide an economical production method of mono-p-nitrobenzyl malonate by recovering excessive malonic acid and effectively using by-products. CONSTITUTION:Production of mono-p-nitrobenzyl malonate is carried out by reacting p-nitrobenzyl alcohol with malonic acid in an organic solvent to which di-p-nitrobenzyl malonate is optionally added, cooling the prepared reaction solution to 35-100 deg.C, separating precipitated malonic acid and treating the remaining reaction solution with a basic aqueous solution at 35-80 deg.C. Di-p- nitrobenzyl malonate prepared as a by-product is hydrolyzed or is reacted with malonic acid and mono-p-nitrobenzyl malonate is obtained to effectively use di-p-nitrobenzyl malonate prepared as a by-product.
