A method is provided of fabricating integrated optical devices on a starting substrate by means of fieldassisted ion exchange. The prepared substrate is connected to a source of potential difference, is masked in accordance with the optical circuit to be implemented and is dipped in a melted salt providing an ion source for the exchange process, a further electrode applying an electric field for inducing ion exchange.
