The system comprises a shelf which is provided with a feeding trough for each animal. This assembly can move up and down along single columns. In the highest position (in which it is inaccessible to the animals), the shelf with troughs is in a virtually vertical position. To be filled, the shelf move downwards and rotates into a horizontal position. After the troughs have been filled, the assembly moves further downwards to the feeding height. After the animals have been fed, the troughs are rinsed with a cleaning medium which is discharged via a central drain gutter on the shelf. The shelf with troughs is then no longer accessible to animals.
