The invention relates to the erection of sheet piling by successively driving into the ground sheet piles, the profiled longitudinal edges of which engage slidably inside one another. Before a following pile is driven in, an accessory which is attached to a point above ground by means of a connecting line and has a short length and width compared to the dimensions of the pile is brought into slidable engagement with the free longitudinal edge of that end of a previously driven pile which projects above ground, after which the accessory is driven into the ground through and with the following pile, causing the connecting line to yield. As soon as, during the driving operation, there is no longer any need to add further connecting line, this is a signal that the pile in question is no longer in contact with the accessory and has therefore "run out of the lock". <IMAGE>
