PRODUCTION OF POLYARYLENE SULFIDE RESIN, AND POLYPHENYLENE SULFIDE RESIN

PURPOSE:To produce a polyarylene sulfide resin which is excellent in toughness and ductility and has a cross-linked structure different from that of a conventional thermally cross-linked polyarylene sulfide resin, and to obtain a polyphenylene sulfide resin having above-mentioned characteristics. CONSTITUTION:A polyarylene sulfide resin, e.g. a polyphenylene sulfide resin, giving a dispersion with a pH higher than 7 when dispersed in an acetone-water mixture in a ratio of acetone to water of 30/70 is thermally treated at a temp. equal to or higher than 180 deg.C and lower than the m.p. of the resin in a nonoxidizing atmosphere under a reduced pressure to give a polyphenylene sulfide resin having melt flow rate(MFR) and intrinsic viscosity [eta] satisfying the relation: [eta]=AX(MFRO) <->BX(MFR/MFRO)<-c>+ or -0.005 (wherein MFRO is the value before thermal treatment; IIFR is the value after the treatment; A=0.9433+ or -0.01; B=0.2170+ or -0.05; and C>=0.150).
