The condensation products of 1-2.5 moles of formaldehyde and 1 mole of a mixture of phenol and a terpenylphenol form resins which are suitable for use in electrical grade laminates. The molar ratio of phenol:terpenylphenol is 1:0.05-0.70. The terpenylphenol is prepared by reacting an unsaturated terpene hydrocarbon with phenol. The resins are used as impregnants in laminates of Kraft paper, asbestos paper, cotton, glass fabrics or wood. A particular advantage is the solubility of the resin in industrial methylated spirits, and easily available raw materials. The laminates have good electrical properties, esp. insulation resistance. They can be used at energy frequencies or radio frequencies, opt. coated with copper and used in electronic equipment. They can also be used for non-electrical purposes.
|
