1,226,404. Making axle casings; welding by pressure. NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP. 3 May, 1968 [30 June, 1967], No. 21210/68. Headings B3A and B3R. In making a tubular axle structure two U- section members with opposite longitudinally extending edges in abutment are welded together from one side along the entire length of each pair of abutting edges and from the other side at least at opposite end portions to form a centre section and wheel-bearing support members are friction welded to the opposite ends of the centre section. The upper and lower halves of the centre section 11, Fig. 4, are stamped or forged from sheet steel and their open edges are welded at 14 from both the inside and the outside at least at the ends, so that the weld extends entirely through the joint. The welded section 11 which has a rectangular cross-section is then swaged at both ends to form cylindrical end regions 17, the end faces 21 of which are machined smooth and the two wheel bearing supports 23 are friction welded to the end regions 17 either simultaneously or in sequence, the section 11 being held stationary and the support 23 being rotated. Non-drive axle beams may be similarly produced. |
