A process for the production of a halogensubstituted aromatic mercapto compound comprises reacting a disulphide of the formula in which X represents a halogen atom, R represents a substituent that is stable under the reaction conditions n is 1, 2 or 3 and b is 1 or 2, under pressure with hydrogen at temperatures of from 60‹ C. to 250‹ C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising, Raney nickel, Raney cobalt, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, platinum or the sulphides or polysulphides of these metals; the reduction being carried out in an inert diluent or on the molten disulphide the reduction being continued in the presence of the mercapto compound formed during reduction. Examples disclose the preparation of 4-chloro-; 4-bromo-; 2,5-dichloro-; 4,6-dichloro-3-methyl-; 2,4,6- trichloro-3-hydroxy and 4-chloro-2-amino-thiophenol.
