A sewing or embroidering machine, which serves for forming stitches on a curved cloth to be machined by means of an upper and a lower thread by the cooperation of a shuttle and of a vertically reciprocally driven needle, is proposed. The sewing machine comprises a holding device for retaining the cloth to be machined. The holding device is supported by a supporting device and is rotatable about a plane parallel to the X-axis. The supporting device is movable in the direction of the Y-axis. The X-axis and the Y-axis are arranged perpendicularly to one another in a plane which extends essentially perpendicularly to the driving direction of the needle. The holding device is driven by an X-axis drive mechanism in a plane parallel to the X-axis. The supporting device is moved by a Y-axis drive mechanism in the direction of the Y-axis. The holding device serves for the holding of the cloth in such a way that an embroidering region is provided for essentially the entire circumferential surface of the cloth. <IMAGE>
