In a safety stirrup with a sprung tread plate which is mounted rotatably about a stationary shaft in a sprung manner between the free ends of the stirrup legs under the action of a helical spring, the spring element for the tread plate can be exchanged easily with a simple design of the pivoting mechanism, and a simple adaptation to the various conditions of equestrianism can take place; at the same time, the possibility exists of limiting the pivoting movement of the tread plate. To this end, the tread plate is received by shaft stubs fastened in the stirrup legs, and one of the stirrup legs has a fork-shaped end part, in which the helical spring is arranged loose on the shaft stub. Moreover, the tread plate is provided on the narrow sides with fork-shaped receptacles embracing the stirrup legs. The legs of the helical spring are supported on the one hand in the fork-shaped end part of the stirrup leg and on the other hand on an extended leg of the fork-shaped receptacle of the tread plate. <IMAGE>
