The invention has the object of a potential distributor which consists of a two-layer flat base rail having a plurality of flat plug tongues, which project from the base rail and are oriented transversely with respect to the course of the rail. Although the flat plug tongues are bent by stamping from the sheet-metal material of the two base rail layers, they are connected either to the upper or lower layer in an alternating sequence, however. In order to produce a reliable potential distributor conveniently and cost-effectively, it is proposed to produce the two layers of the base rail from the two folded limbs of a longitudinally folded integral original strip. The longitudinal fold line, which is located between the two folded limbs which are pressed flat against one another, produces a first longitudinal folded edge in the complete base rail. The original strip has edge parts on two mutually opposite strip edges, which edge parts are admittedly arranged only at specific points, but lie alternately with respect to one another. These edge parts have the particular object of producing a third layer of sheet-metal material in the base rail in certain sections. For this purpose, folds in the original strip are carried out on two parallel fold lines which lie parallel to the longitudinal fold line. Extensions of these edge parts are bent away and produce the flat plug tongues.
